SUYB - December

January 08, 2019

Welcome to the first SUYB of 2019! I'm really looking forward to seeing how many books I can read this year, as well as the recommendations from all of you!

December was a slow book month for me given all the holiday hustle. I found myself reading more kid books than anything, but I did get in 3 adult reads.

Five Busy ElvesFive Busy Elves
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Cute holiday book about five elves at the North Pole as they get ready for Santa to deliver presents.

I love that Scholastic gives the kids a free book each month. It’s only a few pages but they’re cute stories and a good way to keep kids reading.

Nat Nat the Nantucket Cat Goes to the BeachNat Nat the Nantucket Cat Goes to the Beach
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cute kids book about Nat the Nantucket cat and his beach day adventure.

Winter StreetWinter Street
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I've been putting these off for a while and saw them at both B&N and BJ's and then finally had the ingenious idea to check if they were on loan from the library. I listened to this during my drive to/from mom's for Christmas and it was a nice easy listen.

It's pretty much what you'd expect - romance, misunderstandings, laughs, and that cozy holiday feeling. I immediately started the 2nd book as soon as I finished this one.

Yawn! A Grumpy Cat Bedtime Story (Grumpy Cat) (Little Golden Book)Yawn! A Grumpy Cat Bedtime Story (Grumpy Cat
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This cat really is grumpy. Almost bordering on not wanting to finish this short tale with my niece because the cat was such a brat.

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Read this with my niece over the Christmas break and wasn't a big fan. Sure it's cute the pigeon wants nothing more than to drive the bus, but overall this book had zero substance or entertainment.

Winter StrollWinter Stroll
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Book 2 of the series was a bit slower than the first but I liked it a lot. Ava's character really got on my nerves and comes across as a spoiled brat, still, I refuse to leave the series unfinished and will stick around to see how the Quinn family prevails.

Winter StormsWinter Storms
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Seeing as how the story isn't finished, it's hard to review this portion. Things are changing with the Quinn family and everyone seems to be hiding something from the others. Ava redeemed herself somewhat by stepping up (view spoiler) I think Kevin's story is my favorite part so far.

Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies about Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Were Meant to BeGirl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies about Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be {audiobook}

I made it through the first chapter and I knew I wasn't going to make it through the rest of the book.

It seems as though everyone has read this. On first glance, it seems like a great "I am woman, hear me roar" kind of book. Hollis touts that we live the life we choose and that we are the only one responsible for that life and it's outcomes. That after years of lying to ourselves, we're keeping ourselves from a "joy-filled and exuberant life".

This isn't new information to me. I feel like 2018 was the year of self-enlightenment and this book is late to the party. Almost as if she's jumping on the bandwagon at the last minute.
