SUYB - July Reads

August 13, 2019

It's Book Day ya'll! This link up makes me super happy! I always enjoy hearing about what people are reading and this is a great way to share what we've read and find new recommendations. And on that note, here's what I got into for July!

Sunset BeachSunset Beach by Mary Kay Andrews
4 stars {Library}

I listened to this is less than 24 hours and really enjoyed the book. it pulled me in instantly and as I listened I tried to workout who did it and who was a red herring.

Drue is 36 and her life isn't where she thought it would be. After a tough knee injury and the death of her mother, she ends up back in her hometown working at her father's law office.... with her former childhood best friend as her new stepmother. While at the office she encounters a former client whose story she just can't shake.

In an attempt to help the former client she realizes that there's more to the case than was reported. Like a dog with a bone, Drue can't let it go and dives deeper into the cold case.

Andrews is one of my favorites as I really enjoy her writing style and the characters she creates. This was an easy listen and as I said, I finished it in under a day.

My Sister, the Serial KillerMy Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite
3 stars {Library}

This was July's pick for my book club at work. Normaly I never read the books but since this was on my TBR already, I figured I'd give it a go. I finished is a day so I'll say I really enjoyed it. The chapters were quite short so it felt like the book flew by. As much I enjoyed it, I couldn't give it higher than a 3.

Don't get me wrong, I liked this book - a lot. I liked Korede, even though her relationship with Ayoola bothered me. I enjoyed the way it was written - in both the narrative and the actual structure. But it just fell short for me. I suppose the ending wasn't what I wanted or was hoping for and it's possible it soured the overall book for me.

Either way, I'd recommend you give it a read because the story IS good.

Witch Is When Everything Went Crazy (A Witch P.I. Mystery #3)Witch Is When Everything Went Crazy by Adele Abbott
3 stars {Kindle Unlimited}

This is the 3rd installment in the series and I feel like I want to read the other 30+ in the series.

In this, Jill finds herself with a few new cases - stolen vacation funds and a hit-and-run, as well as new antics from Winky and Mrs. V and her grandma and Det. Maxwell, all while she needs to be in her ghost mother's wedding.

We Witch You A Merry Christmas (A Witch P.I. Mystery #5.5)We Witch You A Merry Christmas by Adele Abbott
3 stars {Kindle Unlimited}

Cute, short holiday novella.

Summer of '69Summer of '69 by Elin Hilderbrand
3 stars {BOTM}

I hate to put this book in this category but it was such a slow read for me, which typically doesn't happen with her books. Though, I think it was more me and a bit of reading burn-out. I liked the multi-POV aspect of this story.

It's the summer of '69 and things they are a-changin'. For the Whalen/Levin family everything is different.

Blair is pregnant... and is just so big.
Kirby is on Martha's Vineyard trying to find her own way.
Tiger is away fighting in Vietnam.
And 13-year-old Jessie is on Nantucket... as they've always done.

It's a summer of change, realization, and honesty for this family as they confront fears they're all living with.

The BathroomThe Bathroom by RoxAnne Fox
2 stars {iBooks}

I'm not sure where this book even came from but I found it on my phone when I was doing a backup. At 25 pages I read it while I waited.

It was completely superficial and an excellent way to kill 15 minutes - nothing more. It's going in this category simply because it had zero substance and was something I used as nothing more than waiting for my phone to backup.

Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To GuideStay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide by Karen Kilgariff & Georgia Hardstark

I haven't had a DNF in quite some time and I'm kind of disappointed this was it. I wanted to like this. Hell, I wanted to love it. I enjoy all things true crime and their podcast. But this? I just couldn't. I was still in chapter 1 when I realized I had no desire to read, listen, or finish this book in any capacity.

Mrs. EverythingMrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner

I tried, but I was bored with this book from the get-go.
